Samultang has been used in treatments for ischemia cardiovascular and nervous system. The elements(Angelicae Gigantis Radix, paeoniae radix alba, Cnidii Rhizoman, Rahmanniae Radix Preparata) are also widely known for anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and analgesic effect etc. The aim of this study was to evaluate analgesic effects of samultang
extract(SMT) in formalin(5%, 50¥ìL)-induced pain. The SMT-administrated group(1mL, intraperitoneal injection, n=6) prior to formalin injection significantly attenuated behavioral response as compared with control group(n=6) in orofacial area. The activation of p38 MAPK is a key signaling step in pathway of pain transmission. SMT-administrated rats(n=6) significantly was reduced expression of p38 MAPK in adrenal tissue using Western blot analysis. Cortisol level, which is secreted adrenal gland, was reduced but not statistically significant. These results showed that systemic administration of SMT is associated with pain regulation via p38 MAPK pathway in orofacial area.
